These intricately articulated brass fish are known as 'Medina' fish and were produced in Asia - notably Japan and India - for the western market in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This one comes from Odisha in India.
Often used as paperweights or displayed simply for their decorative beauty, they move extraordinarily like real fish.
