Copper drink-ware is a new global health phenomenon. The copper cup resurgence is due in part to the recent renewed popularity of a cocktail that was all the rage back in the 1950s called a Moscow Mule. The cocktail was traditionally served in a copper mug.

However, most people are unaware of the fact that copper cups can also provide our bodies with numerous health benefits.This has been appreciated in India since ancient times where storing water in copper vessels plays a vital role in areas without access to clean drinking water. This is due to copper's ability to kill harmful microbes and purify water. This method of storing water in copper is also strongly recommended and advocated in Ayurvedic medicine.

The health benefits are too numerous to be listed here in their entirety, but below is a list of some of the most important.

1) Antimicrobial. Storing water in copper vessels overnight removes 97% of all harmful bacteria from drinking water. It also keeps the water cool.

2) It acts as a brain stimulant and is anti-convulsive (prevents seizures)

3) It aids weight loss

4) It regulates the thyroid gland, helping to prevent both under and over active thyroids

5) As a powerful anti-oxidant, it helps ward off cancer

6) It is anti-inflammatory, helping with joint pains, arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis

According to the FDA, about 12 mg/day is more than sufficient for the body to use without causing any harm. So, do not overdo the entire exercise. Drinking water two or three times a day from a copper vessel is more than enough to reap its benefits.

Copper naturally oxidises over time, so please clean regularly using lemon juice or alternatively baking powder and salt. Rinse thoroughly. Never use a scouring pad on copper products.

Pure copper vessels are not suitable for warm or hot food and liquids. Use only for water (and other cold liquids) or dry foods such as nuts.
