A brass bindi box - also known as a 'kum kum' box. These boxes were produced in India to hold the brightly coloured powders used for sacred markings on the forehead in Hindu religious ceremonies. They were often shaped to depict auspicious animals such as the peacock, wich symbolsed beauty and divine protection.
These utilitarian items are now valued as decorative folk art.
