In vegetable and mineral colours, these paintings were created by traditional artists in the temple town of Puri in Odisha state in eastern India.
They were bought by pilgrims whilst visiting the Jagannatha Temple in Puri and were kept as devotional keepsakes.
The production of these paintings declined as modern souvenirs became available.
